Giving birth to a brand…

It was a proud moment when we realised that the brand we created for Liverpool Women’s NHS Foundation Trust was to be featured on the most recent series of Channel 4’s One Born Every Minute.

One Born Every Minute is a ground-breaking, award winning documentary which looks at the drama and emotion of a maternity unit, from the perspective of the parents-to-be and the maternity ward staff.

Liverpool Women’s is only one of two hospitals in the UK which is dedicated to the care and treatment of women and their families, it’s also the largest hospital of its kind and is internationally recognised as a Centre of Excellence.

We worked successfully with Liverpool Women’s NHS Foundation Trust since 2008 when we were commissioned to create a distinctive local brand and identity that worked in conjunction with existing NHS guidelines.

The challenge was to develop a fully inclusive engagement process for staff, patients and stakeholders as well as recognising the role of the local identity as part of the NHS brand. As an extension of the brand identity work, we were also asked to review all their communications collateral with the requirement of adding cohesion and impact.

We devised a process that was both inclusive and in-depth. A series of one-to-ones and workshops were held with staff and around 300 external stakeholders followed to establish the true essence of the brand.

The eight-month programme culminated in a local brand identity that was both distinctive and differentiating amongst other Trusts offering similar services. Following a full collateral audit we also developed a new structured literature hierarchy to help clarify the breadth of services provided. We introduced a brand signature and guidelines, strong colour palette, tone of voice and added consistency to help Liverpool Women’s communicate with greater clarity and confidence. We were also involved in the roll-out and development of collateral such as internal and external brochures, exhibition stands, advertising, web development as well as their newsletter ‘Celebrating Success’ which was recognised by the CiB North Awards with an Award of Excellence.
